Oil is the most permanent of the media. The finished effect is sharper and more defined than pastel or watercolour and I prefer to use oil for landscapes. Painting in oil takes longer than any other medium as it can take several weeks to dry. I have painted animals in oil but the softness is lost. The best example of this is 'Cool Cat', the pastel is soft and dreamy whereas the oil is almost menacing.
